H1 SEO Fundamentals

H1 Heading

The H1 is the main visible title of your page. It helps Google understand your content's topic and structures information for users.

Difference between Title and H1

Many confuse the title tag and H1. They have different roles:

<title>

  • • Visible in browser tab
  • • Displayed in Google results
  • • In the HTML <head>
  • • 50-60 characters max

<h1>

  • • Visible on the page
  • • Main content title
  • • In the HTML <body>
  • • No strict limit

Essential H1 Rules

1. One H1 per page

Each page should have exactly one H1. Multiple H1s create confusion for Google.

2. Different from Title (but consistent)

The H1 and title should be different but complementary. They target the same topic with varied wording.

3. Include the main keyword

Your main keyword should appear in the H1, preferably at the beginning, in a natural way.

4. Logical H1 → H6 hierarchy

Headings should follow a logical hierarchy without skipping levels.
